Today, at this internet age, everyone is connected online with each other. Internet is an inseparable part of our everyday lives. From doing our jobs to socializing with friends, much of our time is spend online. Internet has made our lives easier. But the privilege that we get comes at the cost of our privacy and peace. Types of Cybercrimes
Hacking: It is the unauthorized intrusion into a computer, smartphone or laptop in order to gain access of the confidential information of an individual, group of individuals or an organization in order to exploit them, or for any other evil purposes. A person who engages in the act of hacking is known as a hacker. There a various classifications of hackers. They are:-
A] White Hats: – Also known as ethical hackers, they break network security to check the problems in a system or evaluate the security conditions of their own system or of others. They are certified hackers who break security legally for sinless purposes.
B] Black Hats: – They are the illegal hackers who hack for personal gains or for other malicious purposes. They are the computer criminals who use their knowledge to harm others.
C] Grey Hats: – These hackers lie between white and black hat. They break security without any malicious intent, but sometimes engage in breaking ethical standards and laws of computer hacking.
D] Neophyte: – Someone who is new to hacking who has no knowledge of the workings and technology.
Phishing: It refers to the technique of obtaining personal information fraudlently, such as login name, credit card details nad password. The people are tricked by the emails or instant messages with forged senders address from fake websites of the imposters. The people divulge their personal details into those websites thinking it a legitimate one.
Spam: Mostly email spam, it refers to the sending of bulk messages by email from an unwarranted disguised link that appear to be a known link but lead to a malware site or a phishing site.
Online Piracy: It refers to the unauthorized copying, selling and distribution of other’s work through internet, without the creator’s prior permission. The motivation for online piracy may be due to inability of the customers to pay the legitimate price, or their unwillingness to pay and consume the product for free. The common example is downloading pirated films from internet without informing the creators of the film.
Unauthorized Mass Surveillance: It refers to the spying on a fraction of population or on the whole population to monitor those citizens and gather information about them without their permission by private entities. Social media platforms obtain personal information of its users to know its customer’s mindset in order to maximize their ad sales.
Cyber terrorism: It refers to the act of terrorism by cyber terrorists who instill a sense of fear amongst general public by provoking people through the cyberspace in the name of religion, caste, creed, color or nation, so that they commit nefarious acts towards each other. This also includes hacking activities directed towards individuals, families, organized by groups within networks, tending to cause fear among people, demonstrate power, collecting information relevant for ruining peoples’ lives, robberies and other heinous crimes.
Cyber bullying: It is a form of harassment of an individual or a group of individuals on the internet, mainly on the social media sites. It includes posting rumors, sexual remark, personal information or giving threats to the victim.
Cyber stalking: It refers to the stalking of a person, a group or an organization by the cyber stalkers. It is mostly done to defame or falsely accuse the person. It may also include theft, threats or gathering information about the victim.
Child pornography: It is one of the most sinful cybercrimes, where children are forced to portray sexual subject matter on the internet. These children are kidnapped against their will and then they are sent to various places, away from their home, where they are tortured mercilessly and forced into this outrageous act.
These are some of the internet crimes that are very common today. As the reach of the internet is expanding, millions of people are getting touched by its beneficial side. But its ill effects cannot be overlooked, which will engulf our lives if it remains unchecked. We have to be more careful while using internet, follow the safety norms and protect ourselves from getting hacked or exploited by the cybercriminals who pry on us like vultures and find an opportunity to attack us online.
